The walk-up teller windows at the Maplewood Branch were opened in 1953, just a few years after the drive-up banking window was added – the first of its kind this side of the Mississippi. Both the drive-up banking and the walk-up banking windows were innovative for their time, offering convenience and extended hours for teller transactions. With the advances in technologies such as ATMs, online banking, mobile banking, and mobile deposit, the demand for the walk-up banking windows decreased. In 2002, the walk-up windows were closed in favor of Saturday lobby hours.
In 2020, we are faced with a global pandemic. Our staff and customers have shifted their attention away from convenience and toward reducing the spread of the COVID-19 virus. At the end of the business day on Friday, March 20th, our lobbies temporarily closed to walk-in traffic to help slow the spread of the virus. While the drive-up lanes were efficient, we realized we were missing the face-to-face interpersonal connections with our customers. With the bank’s passion for customer service, we began to brainstorm ways in which we could bring back personal face-to-face interactions, while remaining safe and distant.
Instantly, we thought re-opening our walk-up teller windows would be something great for our customers, as well as the bank. What was once built for security, with the tellers and the money behind a wall with glass openings, is now ideal for the separation needed to protect against the spread of the virus—what’s old is new! Therefore, we got to work. A few coats of paint, wiring for computers, new signage, and a new concrete walkway were added and suddenly our walk-up banking windows are back in business as of Monday, June 22, 2020
We are excited to once again offer face-to-face service to our valued customers. We have missed seeing all of you!
